[ Hm? Rean actually hadn't gone to bed yet, having been organizing the stuff he brought over from his old room when he heard the knock. Crow hassling him at various hours of the night? That was nothing new, but this didn't feel like Crow's presence as he approaches the entrance. Crow's usually livelier than this, for one.
He kind of doubts someone would be that bold to try and get the drop on someone just by straight up knocking on their door, but better safe than sorry. Keeping his tone alert, he'll call out. ]
[ That's weird, he doesn't remember getting room service. That is... unless this was about what happened a couple weeks back. There's a momentary pause before Rean slides the door open, carefully regarding the two brothers with a neutral expression. ]
I didn't think they still had you work past hours. But... I'm guessing that's not what we're here for tonight.
[ It's not like he could forget what the one dressed in black said, anyway. He did want answers, but it didn't look like either of them were at liberty to discuss it at the time. If that was indeed the case, then what's changed since then? ]
[ Well, that's not suspicious. Especially since this was the same guy who punched him in the throat with little effort. And now he's letting them into his room??? Still, he'll step aside, quietly allowing them entry while maintaining that neutral look. ]
All right. Now that you're in here, let's talk. What did you want to discuss?
[ His eyes widen, with his mouth falling slightly agape and a shallow, shaky exhale escaping from him. He recalls his words all too well - when he tried to grab him and demand where they were taking Beatrice's remains before being promptly incapacitated. Now it's been more than a week, with even more bodies to join them. And no one knew where they were being taken, or even if they were being handled respectfully. ]
You— You said I couldn't "go" there back then. [ Wait. Rean shakes those thoughts aside; the overall calm, civil exterior he'd been trying to maintain quickly dissolving into a more frantic, impassioned one. ] No, tell me where they are! What have you done with them?!
[The brother in white feels a headache coming on. He groans.]
Did you really have to go for the dramatics again, Darren? Now he's freaking out!
[He turns to Rean. Let's clear this up, shall we.]
There's... a morgue on one of the floors that you don't have access to. We take them there. That's the simple answer - but there's also a more complicated one. My brother figured your interest in it would make you as good a candidate as any to hear about it.
[ Rean falls silent as the other brother continues, the frantic concern from before fading into an anxious, uneasy look as he listens. So that's where they're being held. Truth be told that's what he kind of figured to begin with, but now that it's been confirmed. ]
Hear about what? ... What's going on? Did something happen to them?
Not yet. If all goes well... [He pauses.] You know what, I'm just gonna start from the top.
[He looks over to his brother in white, who nods in agreement, before back to Rean.]
My brother Lee and I are - double agents, let's say. We've worked for Dr. Chavez for a long time, but for our own reasons we recently started working for a company called Adámas. A group of mercenaries... but we joined them when we learned in secret that they were developing technology to revive the dead.
...Whiiiiich Dr. Chavez doesn't know about at all. [Lee pipes in.]
When we were signed on for this experiment, Adámas wanted a piece of the pie. See, they work for several governments, so they have to keep their shadier side a little downplayed. We can't just be doing human testing on their people... unfortunately for you guys, nothing can be traced when it's people from other dimensions.
So we got an order. 30 bodies for resurrection research - believe it or not, it's, well, significantly lower than what Chavez has planned. We're prepping the ones we already have for it, but... It'll be tough for us... we're just underlings, and Dr. Chavez will notice if we're not working. [He mutters, grumpily] She pretty much has us do everything around here...
So the mercenaries asked us to recruit people as moles to rack up the death count. In exchange... we'll bring everyone back to life. That's an offer you won't get from our other boss.
[ A shaky breath escapes. Was any of this even real? Rean's not even sure he's hearing any of this correctly. ... So these two were mercenaries - jaegers as they were known in his world. And they were asking him to rack up bodies for their research? ]
... I— I don't know what to say here. To be honest, I'm not even sure I'm hearing this right.
[ At the same time... It's not like Rean didn't believe it. After all, he'd already seen resurrection happen right before his very eyes when he came across Crow that day in the hotel. He knew how much his heart felt it was leaving him then, how he scrambled over and clung to his friend in a desperate effort to see if he was real. If this wasn't just a dream. ]
But you'll— you mean you two - You really do have the means to do it? To bring them back?
[ Rean just stands there, stunned. They really wanted him to do it. ...They really wanted him to kill everyone? BUT NEVERMIND THAT WHOA SON what are you doing there with that gun. ]
[Lee is squinting at his misleading overdramatic bro...]
I'm not letting him do that. It will have to be me. Mr. Rean, you can have it when you've agreed to work with us.
I know it's pretty shocking watching brothers kill eachother, but reviving a participant just to put them back under would be cruel. You know? Anyway, the bedrooms are soundproof, so that's not a problem.
[and he points it right at Darren. The man looks resigned.]
[ That's... That's not what he was worried about. Well, he WAS worried about the noise as well as Lee just casually shooting his own brother but. ]
You're not just going to shoot him in here, I mean?! There's no way that won't leave a mess!
[ Rean's attended enough classes in military school and seen enough shit to know PEOPLE BLEED TO DEATH WHEN THEY ARE SHOT. IT'S GOING TO MAKE A MESS. ALL OVER HIS ROOM. THAT'S GOING TO MAKE HIM LOOK HELLA SUSPECT if he's. suspected. ]
And how can you just say that? ...You really mean to say you have no problem pointing a gun at your own family?
We were a pretty fucked up family. It's how we got into this mess in the first place.
Anyway, give us some credit. We clean up all the bodies around here.
[And for some reason it's always done super quick! Though he guesses they could shove the tatami mats somewhere first if Rean's super picky about his demonstrative murder.]
[ This is unbelievable... Though Rean wasn't sure if he'd be able to believe it otherwise. For all he know it could easily be sleight of hand, but... if it were, there's one way to find out, isn't there? ]
Well... I do want to see some proof, yeah.
[ He folds his arms, looking dead serious and looking them right in the eye. ]
But we're having none of that "shooting your brother" business. If you're going to do it, then shoot me.
[He blinks. This seems a bit contradictory. He wants proof, but he'd risk his life for it anyway? For a moment, Lee falters, as though he's seriously considering pointing it at him. But then he shakes his head.]
They'd know, if it was you. It's a good idea, but... [At least from his perspective. Not having to shoot his brother all the time might be a little nice.] This is how it has to be. I'm sorry.
[Who is he saying that to? He can't ask, because the trigger is pulled. When Darren is confirmed to be dead, Lee grabs something that looks like a black box and presses it to the mortal wound.]
